I am bringing all my energies to bear on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God is calling us.
—Philippians 3:13-14 TLB
Boxes and packing tape…bed frames and mattresses…dish boxes and packing paper…and packing tape…desks, chairs, tools, pictures, books, computers, wardrobe boxes and packing tape…hangers and shoes and packing tape and more shoes and more books!
It takes a lot to move a family.
We spent this past weekend helping friends move in after a long trip from California. Moving is at once tough, exciting, reflective and filled with hope.
Tough because you have to do all this work and it is not easy but the promise of a future that is hopeful keeps you focused and gives that extra energy to carry that box, unpack that closet even if it is 96 degrees! But tougher still is starting all over, building relationships and learning to build trust again.
Exciting because there are new things to learn, and to explore, new people to meet, and new opportunities to discover.
Reflective because you think of the people you are leaving behind, the history you shared, and all the work you did and sometimes wonder how it will turn out. You also wonder why you are packing all this stuff you haven’t used just to take it to a new place where you probably won’t use it either. You vow to live differently!
Filled with hope because new beginnings are all about hope. Hope for things to be different, even though much will be the same, hope for the new start even if you don’t know the people you with whom you will be serving.
It takes a lot to move a family.
It takes a lot to move an organization. I couldn’t help but reflect on the fact that a year ago John Harding, Janice Hagensicker and I joined the remarkable people and physician partners of University Community Health when UCH became part of the Adventist Health System. Wow what a move!
It has been at once tough, exciting, reflective and filled with hope for all 3,000+ of us. A new beginning, with new faces and people to know and understand, new ways of working, new benefits and policies. But underneath it all is the promise of our future that we are building together, not alone but with the strength that comes from each other and from the grace of God above.
