You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to get rid of your old self,… to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self.
—Ephesians 4:21-24
At least once a day I hit it unknowingly, only TO LOOK UP AND REALIZE THAT CAPS LOCK HAS BEEN ACTIVATED and now I have to re-type everything over again.
Few computer keys have the power to frustrate like the CAPS LOCK. "Enter" is fun because it makes things happen, "Control-Alt-Delete" is my power trip as it gives me the opportunity to tell Windows a thing or two. Well…at least try!
But CAPS LOCK sneaks up and ruins a great typing run. It can take reasonable words and make them appear like I am YELLING AT THE PERSON TO WHOM I am writing.
When I least expect it or need it…I hit the CAPS LOCK key.
How about you? Are there things, procedures, or people in your life that you unwittingly activate only to be frustrated and set back? Are there policies or procedures that no longer make sense to you—or any other ‘sentient being’—yet you still must deal with them?
Now think about this from your patient's point of view. How many times should they need to give their information? How many times do they need to sign the HIPPA form? How many times do they need to call to get an appointment, press the call light for help, or get all their questions answered?
Sure there are CAPS LOCK keys in your life and mine, and we need to deal with them. (Perhaps this may be the solution.)
Might it be possible that how you do what you do could be experienced as a CAPS LOCK key for your patients, fellow associates, physician partners or community? If you really want to know, ask them enough times and they might tell you. Then your work of leadership becomes to remove, disable, reprogram, and remap those challenging things so they no longer frustrate, discourage or annoy others.
It is one thing to recognize the CAPS LOCk KEys of life; it is the work of leaders to deal with them effectively.

In a few moments you will meet someone who needs help dealing with their CAPS LOcK KEy…help them by getting rid of the old way by putting on a new attitude, a new way that really makes a difference.
